Darn Good Yarn Mystery Box Unboxing
Have you heard of mystery boxes? Some yarn and craft companies sell boxes or bags without telling you exactly what you will receive. It’s a mystery! In addition to the surprise, mystery boxes often contain a higher value of products than what you pay. You essentially are getting a great deal at the expense of not knowing the specific contents of the package.
This post contains affiliate links. When you click an affiliate link and make a purchase, I may receive a small commission. This does not result in any additional charges to you. I purchased this mystery box by myself. My opinions are my own.
I purchased the Super Saver Mystery Box, version 6 from Darn Good Yarn. I paid $125.33 including tax and shipping. The actual value of the box is listed at $299. The box was to contain: “10 skeins of premium silk yarn; tools & notions; kits & patterns; and jewelry.” Did I get what was listed? Did I get a bargain?
Here’s what I saw when I opened the box:

Wow, this box definitely looks packed! I was very excited to see the beautiful yarn. Let’s take a look at those first.

Item: 2 cakes of Silk Roving Worsted Weight Yarn.
Colorway: Lily Pad

Price: $14.99 each

Item: 2 cakes of Darn Good Twist Sport Weight Silk Yarn.
Colorway: Lilac Springs
Weight: 2
Price: $16.99 each
These colors are amazing! My favorite would have to be the beautiful rainbow of Watercolors. I am also pleased that most of the yarns are weight 4 which is what I generally prefer to work with. I am glad that they gave 2 cakes each so I will have enough yarn for a small project with each colorway.
This is only 8 cakes of yarn, but we were promised 10. However, those two colorful boxes are Yarn of the Month subscription boxes, and they should each contain at least one cake or skein of yarn. You can learn more about the subscription boxes by reading my previous post about the plan here. Let’s look inside!

Item: 1 cake of Darn Good Twist Sport Weight Silk Yarn in Lilac Springs. Price: $16.99
Item: Size US 10 Knitting Needles and Crochet Hook. Price: $19.99
Item: Booklet with one knit and one crochet pattern. Approximate value: $10

Item: 1 cake of Silk Roving Worsted Weight Yarn in Midnight Pines. Price: $14.99
Item: Felt Ball Coaster 2 Pack. Price: $13.99
Item: Booklet with one knit and one crochet pattern. Approximate value: $10
I have actually gotten both of these subscription boxes in the past and will do detailed reviews of them in time. Therefore, I will keep my thoughts here brief. I was delighted to see that now I have a third cake of the Twist Sport Weight Silk in Lilac Springs!
After pulling out the yarns and subscription boxes there were still items in the mystery box! I got the following:

Item: DIY Watermelon Amigurumi Knit & Crochet Starter Kit.
Price: $19.99
I was excited to see this kit! It not only includes the yarn and patterns, it also contains the stuffing, a plastic crochet hook, a plastic darning needle, and four wooden double pointed needles. I cannot wait to make these cute watermelon plushies! I think I will stitch little faces on them! So cute!

Item: Size US 10 Knitting Needles and Crochet Hook.
Price: $19.99
Does this set look familiar? Yes, these knitting needles and crochet hook are the same size and color as the free gift in one of the subscription boxes. I am kind of bummed with a duplicate item but I will consider both sets in the overall value of the mystery box.

Item: Handmade Wooden Shawl Pin.
Price: $11.99
This is a beautiful shawl pin! It would be a great gift to include along with a crocheted shawl.

Item: Size Rainbow Wool Sheep Enamel Pin.
Price: $12.99
This pin is absolutely adorable and so colorful! It will look great on one of my project bags!

Item: Sea Glass Diffuser Bracelet.
Price: $14.99
This bracelet is meant to be used along with essential oils. I am not into oils, but it is still a beautiful bracelet that I will totally wear. Bonus: a cute drawstring pouch!
That was all the contents of this Super Saver Mystery Box. Were you surprised? I loved absolutely everything except the double set of knitting needles and crochet hook. My absolute favorite item (other than the yarn!) is the sea glass bracelet, followed by the watermelon amigurumi kit.
So what was the total value of the box? The yarn alone comes to $155.90. If you add in the other items, the grand total is $289.83. That’s just 10 dollars shy of their given value of $299.99 and the difference could be due to my having to estimate the prices of the patterns at $5 each. For example, if they were $7.50 each, the total would have been $299.83, right on the money. Either way, I got nearly $300 in product for just $125. I do believe the name “Super Saver” was accurate! I had a lot of fun with this mystery box and I am sure I will purchase more in the future.
